    WOW issues

Is anyone else having issues with WOW dropping connection. It does not matter what server. We have found if we log into CounterStrike:Source and refresh the internet server list it will consistently cause all WOW clients to disconnect.

Anyone else seen this or have any suggestions?

    Thanks

    WOW issues

If WOW sees you lagging really bad it will disconnect you.

Thats why when you refresh your CS server lists, you disconnect.

Can anything be done to prevent this? City of Heroes and Matrix Online etc don't have this problem.

    Thanks

its probably your connection. You most likely dont have enough bandwith to allow the amount of traffic that so many games/people use. We are lucky to have only 20 machines and are never full so our 5meg cable internet can handle the traffic from our players. Your connection is probably just not capable of handling that many people.I'm 100% positive that if you did the same thing with one WoW account and one CS with nothing else online you would have no problem. If I'm wrong then it's hardware issues with your machines or your network.

Well, I guess I don't agree. We have 16 pc's on a 2mb/2mb cable connection. This will happen with only one WOW account and one counterstrike running. Little to no other traffic on the network. We run gigabit ethernet between machines using only switches and the router is a dual Mac G4 running OSX Server. There are no errors logged. This would also occur with a Linksys router and a netgear router but even worse in most cases.

Wow show's between 40-100 ping times and traceroutes are normal as close as we can get to the WOW servers.

    Any other suggestions?

Remember, this happens with no other games.

    Thanks

Since you don't trust us, why not call Blizzard or Valve support and ask them...

Oh yeah, cause they don't support centers...

Basically the answer you got from the others is correct. refreshing a server list does take up a lot of badnwidth as it is sending a 'ping' message to every server on the list. The fact that it happens with no other games, simply means the other games have better networking code then WoW (which from what I have seen has fairly bad network code compared to other games).

Who said I don't trust you?

I wouldn't have asked here if I didn't respect the level of members here. I was hoping to have someone confirm that they have seen this issue too.

Thanks to everyone's comments I came up with an idea that I am going to be testing. Since WOW is down for server patching for the next 6 hours or more I will have to wait to see if it works but this is what I have found out.

Steam has a setting for your bandwidth. I noticed that if I set this bandwidth from LAN>1M down to 14.4k that the server refresh is much slower. The games still play properly and i have not noticed any other issues from it. Im hoping that this will help my WOW issue.

Thanks to all those that responded and I'll let you know the outcome.

    NO!

bad things happen when you lower that to 14.4. It changes the net rates and everything will run like crap..or at least it looks that way.

I can tell you this. I am running a T1 and have 20 PC's. Pulling a server list in any game will suck up the entire thing. Steam is bad because there are so many servers. However WOW never kicks anyone out. Since you are running cable, I would recommend you take it up with the cable company. Ask them things about simultaneous user access and ask them if they have internal caps. The network gurus on these forums might have more technical terms to use.

FYI: Steam also has a setting that tells it how much bandwidth to use for updates. That doesn't work at all.

DLC, what kind of router are you using and what kind of switch?

    DlC,

When you refresh the servers in CS, it floods the router. We had that problem for a while, so we set up a packet limiter between the router and each host. Its not a bandwidth issue, but a packet issue. For a while anytime someone refreshed, the net died and people got booted from fps servers for high pings.

One thing, each machine must be limited individually

Ooooo..details please....what did you use for a packet limiter? Are there any settings you can pass along?

    Thanks

Just to give you some back-up, the same exact thing happens here. Anytime anyone messes with CS then the WoW and the Guild Wars guys lock-up, causing them to restart whatever they are working on. We have a single 4M/2M cable connection per 5 computers and if one guy downloads a new map, or refreshes a server list, or just about anything with CS then the guys on that same connection lock-up.

My bet is that it has something to do with the cable modems which are just bridges and pretty stupid units. I bet they are limited for normal use and what CS does is cause them to temporarily freeze, which is enought to boot the MMORPG guys.

    Re:

Well, it seems everyone has this problem at varying degrees but not everyone has solved it. Care to fill us in?

Edit: Ha, guess this is a pretty old thread. :P

    Re: Re:

We found our solution... getting rid of that STEAMing pile of crap that Valve makes.

I don't have anything against CS or any of the Steam games, just the Steam app and its creator. They don't care about the bandwidth issues and they don't offer any support in fixing it. You'd think they could tweak something and fix it.

All that aside, it was an easy choice for us, and I've posted about it on here before:

Take the number of Steam players you have per quarter and the money they spend, subtract it from what you pay to have Steam licenses at your store per quarter, and if you end up with a negative number... get rid of Steam licensing, go renegade on the licenses or buy "prepaid" Steam time. You can also add in a few other variables like... # of Steam players vs. # of WoW players, or cursing, mean-spirited CS players that smack mice on tables and shake monitors vs. headache-free peace and quiet (^_^)
