Wayne Ferguson:We would need the publisher, or a sponsor, to account for the hard costs and prizes.
If a sponsor were not concerned about the exact game, we'd probably get more turnout for Halo 3 or CoD4.
While I do not doubt that turnout for
Halo 3 and
Call of Duty 4 could potentially be greater, the gamers that would hypothetically take part in a Gears event are virtually the same demographic.
Also, the prospect of a tournament in a given game always has the potential to drive up casual play in our centers. For example, for the 2 months leading up to a Gears 4v4 that we held at the end of February,
Gears of War was the most played X360 game despite H3 and CoD4 breathing down it's neck. Wouldn't such a scenario be ideal for, say, promoting awareness of
Gear of War 2 and driving pre-orders for either Best Buy or Gamestop? Would Microsoft and Epic value that? Would every company that produces and sells licensed
Gears of War merchandise (t-shirts, toys, stickers, faceplates, underoos, etc.) find value in that?
