The Digital Ops' Guide to mIRC
mIRC is a client for connecting to an IRC (Internet
Relay Chat) server. Just like Internet Explorer is a web browser that
can be used for viewing web pages served off a web server. There are
many more IRC clients out there; mIRC just happens to be a popular one
in the Windows world. Save yourself from horrible humiliation, don't
say: "let’s get on mirc", say "let’s talk
via IRC"... To get started you will need to download the program
from www.mirc.com.
- Install mIRC.
- Launch mIRC.
- Close the "About mIRC" window that opens.
- You are now at the "mIRC Options" window. In the "IRC
Network" pull down menu, select "GameSurge".
- If this does not appear as an option, just
follow the steps below, log in to a random server and follow these
steps:
- Using mIRC, log in to IRC as usual. If you can’t log in,
fear not. Stop the connection process and continue with these instructions.
The commands below will work whether you are connected to IRC or not.
- In the Channels window enter the following commands one at a time:
- /server -a irc.gamesurge.net -g GameSurge -d GameSurge IRC
Network
- /server -a irc.au.gamesurge.net -g GameSurge -d GameSurge
Australian Servers
- /server -a irc.ca.gamesurge.net -g GameSurge -d GameSurge
Canadian Servers
- /server -a irc.eu.gamesurge.net -g GameSurge -d GameSurge
European Servers
- /server -a irc.us.gamesurge.net -g GameSurge -d GameSurge
US Server
- This will add five GameSurge servers to your server list. You can
then select one to log in with for future logins. And everything should
behave normally
- Directly below the "IRC Network" pull
down menu is a list of GameSurge servers. Choose one that fits your
location, though this probably won't matter too much.
- Further down is a "Full Name" and "Email
Address" field; enter what you wish here.
- Just below that is a "Nickname" & "Alternative" field;
you must enter a nickname here, and please abide by the following iGames
standard:
- A 3-4 letter acronym representing the center you are from, surrounded by the "[" and "]" characters
- Your actual name following the "]" character. Example: My name is Josh, and I represent the gaming center Digital Ops. I would use the nickname "[dOps]Josh" on IRC. Tyler from Icelan uses the nickname "[ICE] Tyler".
You are now ready to connect to the GamesSurge
IRC Network. Hit the "OK" button to save these settings.
Now hit the "Lightning bolt" icon in the upper left hand
corner of the screen, or select the "File" menu, and
choose "Connect".
Once connected, it will bring up the window "mIRC
Channels Folder". In the text field at the top of this window,
type "#igames", and click the "Join" button.
If you fail to connect, this could be for a variety of reasons.
General iGames notes:
There are a couple channels accessible for iGames
information:
-
#igames is generally meant for gamers/iGames
registered players to meet & communicate. (IRC can be great
for coordinating games with other centers).
-
#igames-ladders is used
during game nights to organize matches and report scores.
-
#igames-members is generally used for registered
iGames center owners to communicate with each other.
These & other channels for iGames will come up from time to time to be used specifically for certain events, feel free to idle in them, ask & answer questions, etc. You'll usually find the most people in either #igames or #igames-members.
IRC Commands
Any text following a "/" will not be
printed into a channel unless specific commands are used.
Join
other channels: After you are connected to a server, go to the "Commands" menu,
and select "Join Channel", then type in the channel name.
The other way: Type "/join #channelname",
where "channelname" is the name of the channel you wish
to join. For instance, type "/join #igames-members" To
join channel igames-members.
On the right hand side of each channel window
(you get a separate window for each channel you join) is a list
of users in that channel.
If you double click on a username in the right
hand side of the window, a private message window will pop up.
You can also message people by typing: "/msg username yourmessage".
(Do not include the "" quotation marks.)
